The Good, the Bad, and the Undiscovered #5.0

Every week Spotify produces a list of songs I probably like, but don’t really know (read: haven’t played so far). This goes under the title Discover Weekly. So far: thank you Spotify!

In this blog I pick three suggestions from this list every week: the good, the bad, and the undiscovered. A great song; one that I do not really like (why is it in this list?); and one that is completely unexpected.

The Good,

Johnnie Allan – Promised Land

I adore authentic music. Simple, nog flashy arrangements with seven minutes long guitar solos or multifarious synthesizer arrangements. So, this week just rock ‘n roll from cajun country. No explanation, just exaltation. And the swamp feeling, of course.

The Bad,

Kate Bush – Rocket Man

Kate Bush, Brilliant! Elton John, Famous! So why are they figuring in The Bad?
Not because Elton John often has been set away as a guilty pleasure – correctly so, just think of the quasi-engaged Nikita.
But now that Elton John is at the end of his great career – think of a host of other songs – he is honored with an album on which world stars of pop music play Elton John covers. Some are passable, or exceptional at least. Kate Bush however, with her decaying voice, presents Rocket Man in a reggae version. Rock bottom, I would say.

and The Unexpected

Chuck Prophet – Jesus was a social drinker

Jesus was a Social Drinker”, pure Click Bait! And good for a smile on my face. Chuck Prophet – no, it’s said to be his real name – became known in the eighties because of his work with Green on Red. And with his lyrics he transports Jesus to the 21st century. Almost good for conversion…

He never had a laptop
A spiral notebook or even a pen
But he wrote a best-selling novel, yes he did
Disappeared and was never heard from again

He was an all-around decent dude
But he had his share of rough nights
And the more I learn about him
Well, the more respect I have for the guy
